STATE OF THE ARTIST

DEFUNCT
The Beatles have been defunct since 1970, except for the re-union sessions to record two songs for the Anthology series of CD's. After John's death in 1980, there could be no permanent reunion. The group made a pact early on if anyone left the group, they would never be replaced, the group would essentially be over.

RELATIONSHIPS
John Lennon / Paul McCartney
Although this was a band where all four members were indispensible, Lennon and McCartney wrote most of the songs and the band would not of existed without them. There were three phases of the Lennon/McCartney writing relationship. From the beginning until around late 1964, they generally got together and wrote songs. From 1965 to 1967 or so, they would write the majority of songs by themselves, with the other helping out with finishing them off in the studio during recording. From early 1968 until the end, as their relationship became more strained, the two wrote songs by themselves, rarely collaborating. Beatles manager Brian Epstein began feeling useless after the group quit touring in 1966. His death in 1967, many believe was a suicide because of this. What he did not know was that he was the glue that held the band together, as after his death, with the band leaderless, relationships deteriated and fell apart altogether after 2 years.
